The Eastward Carolina Pirates are the athletic teams that represent Eastward Carolina University (ECU), located in Greenville, North Carolina. All varsity-level sports teams participate at the National Collegiate Able-bodied Association (NCAA) Sectionalisation I (Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) for football) level as a member of the American Athletic Conference. The school became an NCAA member in 1961.[three]

Name origin [edit]

Pirates have long been associated with the Northward Carolina coast. One of the most famous pirates, Blackbeard, resided in the North Carolina littoral communities of Bathroom, Beaufort and Ocracoke.[4] The modern day mascot is based on the description of Blackbeard.[5] Many other pirates used the shallow coast and Outer Banks to evade capture. ECU officially became the Pirates in 1934. In 1983, a contest was developed to name the Pirates. Children from all over Pitt County submitted their ideas, and Pee Dee the Pirate was called. The Pee Dee River is a river along the Due north Carolina and South Carolina border where pirates often set camp. The proper name was less than popular with ECU students, and in 1985 Chancellor Howell decided on his ain to drib "Pee Dee" and exist known just equally "The Pirates". People still utilise the terms Pee Dee and Petey as the terms for The Pirates, and PeeDee is still the name of their mascot.[v]

E.C. Men's basketball game [edit]

ECU Men's Basketball is coached past Joe Dooley and plays in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. The ECU Lady Pirates won the 2010 C-USA Softball regular flavour and conference tournament titles. The head coach of the Lady Bucs is Courtney Oliver.

Pitcher Toni Paisley was drafted tenth overall in the 2011 National Pro Fastpitch Typhoon by the Akron Racers.

The women'southward soccer team represents East Carolina University in NCAA Division I college soccer and competes in the American Athletic Conference. The Pirates are coached past former West Virginia Wesleyan alumnus and North Carolina Wesleyan Higher coach Rob Donnenwirth, and play their domicile games in Stewart Johnson Stadium, a one,000-seat stadium located in Greenville, N Carolina.[13] The stadium opened on August 19, 2011.[14] The stadium was selected every bit i of the hosts for the 2020 NCAA Sectionalisation I Women'south Soccer Tournament and 2020 NCAA Division I Men'south Soccer Tournament.[fifteen] [16]
