For bilingual students who wish to aid in the communication and understanding of those with only one language in a variety of fields, translation and interpretation may be the perfect area of study. CCA is the only Colorado college that offers a certificate, as well as an associate of applied science, in translation and interpretation, which will prepare students for a career as an interpreter in many industries.

Being a part of CCA's award-winning Translation and Interpretation Program is the first step on a path to success. The program has been recognized for Academic Excellence and was selected as a Colorado Community College System Outstanding Program.
Translation and Interpretation Certificate
CCA is currently the only Colorado college that offers a Translation and Interpretation Certificate. If your desire is to be a translator or to be an interpreter, this program is for you. Graduates can enter the workforce in the fields of medicine, law, and education, among others.
This general certificate is intended for proficient bilingual students interested in gaining skills for employment as interpreters and/or translators as well as for currently working translators and interpreters looking to polish off their skills. A legal certificate is also offered that requires all of the courses in the general certificate, as well as paralegal and criminal justice courses, to prepare students for employment in the legal field. In addition, a medical certificate that adds biology and health professional courses is also offered for students wanting to pursue a career in the medical field. Finally, an associate of applied science, with special emphasis on legal and medical terminology and concepts is offered.
Upon successful completion, students will be able to provide effective interpreting services in both consecutive and simultaneous modes. Translators and translator learners will find valuable the input from experienced proofreaders in their language pair, with the practice translations commented in detail to every student.
Prospective students must demonstrate adequate proficiency level in English and the other language for an invitation to the mandatory program orientation and enrollment in the certificate. Please fill out the Translation and Interpretation Orientation Exemption Request Form to request an orientation or if you believe you may be exempt from orientation due to satisfactory English and Target Language Proficiency Requirements.

Get started now by taking the following steps to prepare for registration for the upcoming semester.
STEP 1: Apply to CCA to receive your S#
(Also apply to Financial_Aid and College Opportunity Fund if seeking financial assistance)
STEP 2: Complete Translation and Interpretation Program Questionnaire
Provide the appropriate documents (i.e. transcripts from high schools, college, or High School Diploma). The questionnaire was created in Jotform and is linked to TRI in Teams. It helps identify the students primary and target languages, possible level of proficiencies, and which tests the student will need to take to determine the level of proficiencies. The end goal is to make sure the student has a strong enough skill level to adequately communicate (oral and written) primarily in both languages.
STEP 3: Schedule and take the Accuplacer for English Test or ESL-LOEP Test (in-person exam)If you are unclear of which one to take, email Svetlana Ehrhart at Svetlana.Ehrhart@ccaurora.edu for clarification. Either test is required to understand the students' level of English language competencies. Students are required to have proven completion or test into ENG 121 in order to be ready for the TRI program courses.
STEP 4: Schedule and take Translation and Interpretation Test (if Spanish is target language)
Spanish faculty have designed this test; they grade it and the scores are provided back to the testing center and added to SOATEST. Those who do not test for SPA 235 or higher will be required to take SPA 235. For languages other than Spanish, please contact the Translation and Interpretation program directly.
*If the student has a transcript from a country with a primary language other than English (LOTE), contact the TRI program to see whether or not you need to take this.
STEP 5:Schedule meeting with Academic Advisor (Svetlana Ehrhart) to register for courses.
STEP 6: Meet with Department Chair Savannah Sanburg or Lead Faculty Abdulaziz Aldhohayan
Develop an individualized TRI academic curriculum map and upload it into Navigate.
Optional Step: Complete Translation and Interpretation Program Online Orientation videos
These orientation videos are designed to provide the student with as much information about the TRI program to give them a strong understanding of what is required to be successful in the program. There are 9 videos which are an average of 3.5 minutes long. We ask the student to review the videos so that they are fully aware of the program expectations prior to registration. It hurts the student as well as CCA when students are not prepared and fail to complete the program or their courses.
